VIRIDIS Palm Oil Mill Processing Solutions:

To avoid excessive production of free fatty acids resulting from a natural enzymatic process in the mesocarp, it is recommended to limit transportation of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from harvesting to sterilization to 72 hours. This is because fresh palm oil normally contains about 1% free fatty acids (FFA), which may rapidly increase with fruit maturation, decreasing the oil’s value. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure a timely and efficient transportation process to minimize the risk of FFA production.

VIRIDIS Palm Oil Fruit Sterilisation

To prepare the FFB for oil extraction, operators use steam to sterilize them in autoclaves with a capacity of 20 to 30 tons, which helps inactivate natural enzymatic activity, loosen the fruit, and soften the mesocarp. The steam is applied at a temperature of 130°Celsius and a pressure of 3.1 bars for 90 minutes, ensuring the FFB are properly sterilized.

VIRIDIS Palm Oil Mill Fruit Threshing

After sterilization, operators send the FFB to rotary drum threshers to separate the sterilized fruits from the bunch stalks. As a result of this process, residues such as empty fruit bunches (EFB) are generated, which typically contain moisture. Since it maintains soil moisture, EFB can serve as an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, to achieve lower moisture content in the EFB, some mills employ EFB pressing techniques. This allows it to be used as biomass fuel in suitable boiler systems for steam/electricity production.

Operators discharge the separated fruits into vertical steam-jacketed drums (digesters) and treat them mechanically to convert them into a homogeneous oily mash. Additionally, to facilitate homogenisation, they add hot water to the digester before putting the mash into the oil extraction press (screw press).

Subsequently, the screw pressing process extracts palm oil from the mash. After collecting the extracted oil phase, the operators discharge it to the purification section. Meanwhile, they separate the solid parts, comprising fibre and nuts, by physical means.

VIRIDIS Palm Oil Clarification

To ensure the complete removal of all impurities from crude oil in a palm oil production plant, the process of clarification is utilized. This involves transferring the sludge to different tank chambers to remove particles and other suspended materials. Solids are removed through the use of settling tanks based on gravity, and the centrifuge may be used at other levels. Additionally, the process involves introducing water at high temperatures of 85-90 degrees to dissolve the content. Finally, a vacuum dryer is utilized to evaporate water from the oil after the clarification of palm oil.

VIRIDIS Waste Oil Treatment & Refining

Large-scale mills typically transfer the purified and dried oil to a storage tank for dispatch. To prevent solidification and fractionation, the oil is kept at around 50°C using hot water or low-pressure steam-heating coils. Inadequate lining of the storage tank may cause iron contamination. Therefore, temperature regulation of the storage is critical, as it can affect the rate of oxidation of the oil.

VIRIDIS Nut and Kernel Separator

The screw press separates the solid parts from the oily mash, after which physical means are employed to separate the fibre and nuts. Once separated, the fibre is utilised as biomass fuel in a boiler, while the nuts are directed to the nutcracker or ripple mill section to recover palm kernel, which is another product of the palm oil mill, besides crude palm oil (CPO).

VIRIDIS Palm Kernel Extraction

By ensuring a high efficiency recovery process of palm kernel, palm kernel recovery prepares for the next step of the palm kernel oil pressing process after the splitter and crushing stages in the palm oil pressing processing line. Additionally, the efficient recovery of palm kernel is essential for producing high-quality palm kernel oil, which is used for various purposes, such as cooking oil, food ingredients, and personal care products. Therefore, optimizing the palm kernel recovery process is crucial for maximizing the yield and profitability of the palm oil mill.
